Or rather - perception of consumption.
take time for example. most people are relatively aware of the pool noodle theory. where in the perception of time can be altered. some days drag, some days fly by. both days are measured exactly the same way, so how is it that we perceive them differently?
the pool noodle theory suggests that time, though measured, can be bent. and sometimes you ride the outside curve (time drags) and sometimes you ride the inside (time flies)
I've drawn you a diagram here so you can visualize.

now with that in mind, I'm going to imply my OWN theory regarding the perception of consumption in regards to toilet paper.
I'm a bachelor by all definitions. I live alone and only once and awhile have lady callers share in the wonderment that is my mancave. So because of this, sometimes I get lazy. Sometimes, I don't put the toilet paper in it's little holder. SOMETIMES, I just pull out a roll and leave it on the counter. GO AHEAD AND JUDGE ME. I KNOW YOU DO IT TOO.
today wasn't one of those sometimes though. and I actually installed the roll into it's little holder. I don't track my bathroom activities, but I can safely say that today I don't recall using the facilities any more than usual. yet somehow, in less than 24 hours, that ENTIRE roll in it's holder is now on it's last leg. BUT. had I placed it on the counter, I am absolutely certain that it would not be down to a few spare squares. thus supporting my own theory on perception of consumption. on the counter? outside curve.
here's another drawering so you can visualize.
